Thematic Areas of Focus

GHRC has historically monitored and provided analysis of five thematic areas that have affected human rights: militarization, access to land, justice and historic memory, women’s rights, and criminalization and impunity. As these five themes become increasingly intertwined, we continue to monitor these themes through our advocacy on general conditions and case-specific work and support of defenders in Guatemala. We also connect these issues to identifying and addressing regional, structural issues that contribute to human rights violations and drive migration.

Access to Land and Natural Resources

GHRC documents and denounces violations that arise from transnational extractive projects and other land conflicts and provides support in a number of paradigmatic cases.

Criminalization and Impunity

Women’s Rights
Derechos de las mujeres

GHRC works to raise awareness about the brutal violence against women that has claimed the lives of over 5,000 women since 2000. Currently, Guatemala is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a woman. Entrenched gender bias, a history of sexual violence during the internal conflict, institutional weaknesses, and rampant impunity leave women unprotected and with little access to justice. GHRC partners with women’s organizations and community leaders to support and promote their proposals for positive change at the local and national levels.
