FALL MATCHING GRANT CAMPAIGN UNDERWAY - DONATE TODAY!
From January through June of 2009, Guatemalan human rights defenders suffered 171 attacks, including ten murders, in comparison with 125 attacks during the same six months of 2008. Our Human Rights Defenders program needs your support now more than ever. Two of our generous donors have given GHRC a challenge. They will match every response to this appeal dollar for dollar up to $5,000. So the money you give today will be doubled.
The work of Guatemalan human rights defenders is inspiring and heroic. GHRC supports them through our urgent actions, letters to the Guatemalan government demanding full investigation of crimes against them, protection for the defenders and their families, and conviction of the criminals.
In addition to accompanying Jerónimo’s case in Guatemala, GHRC staff led two delegations to Guatemala in the month of August. Twenty-two delegates visited Mayan communities (Mam, Kakchiquel, and Achi women’s organizations in the departments of Quetzaltenango, Solola, Chimaltenango, and Baja Verapaz). The delegates also visited Guatemalan human rights organizations, government officials, and the US embassy to learn, discuss, and share information on violence against women and femicide in Guatemala.
In October GHRC will host Guatemalan lawyer and professor Gladys Monterroso for a two-week speaker’s tour on the East coast of the U.S., to continue informing and organizing around violence against women in Guatemala. Gladys was abducted, tortured, and raped in March 2009. She met with GHRC’s August delegation to share her testimony and urge the international community to exert pressure for change in Guatemala.
The situation for human rights defenders and women in Guatemala is difficult, and the statistics are getting worse. However, GHRC is committed to creating positive change through addressing the root causes of violence, providing individual support in emergency situations, and providing you with information and tools for action.
Help GHRC continue to raise awareness about human rights violations in Guatemala.
