Human Rights Defenders Postcard Campaign

GHRC collected thousands of postcards in support of human rights defenders. They were presented to the Secretary of President Colom in March of 2009; remaining postcards will be delivered to the Guatemalan Embassy in Washington, DC.

Postcard text (on backside):

Dear Mr. President,

Attacks against Human Rights Defenders have increased more than 370% since 2000. This phenomenon casts doubt on the will of the Guatemalan government to guarantee the right of human rights defenders to carry out their activities without any restrictions or fear of reprisals and combat the ongoing violence against them. The failure to investigate and punish those responsible for the threats, physical assaults, raids, and murders against so many human rights defenders furthers impunity and increases the feeling of insecurity not only of human rights defenders but the population in general. I join the call of the Guatemala Human Rights Commission/USA for the Guatemalan authorities to promptly and effectively investigate these attacks, provide protection for those affected, and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Respectfully,
