2009 Delegation: The Socio-political context of Violence Against Women in Guatemala

GHRC led two delegations during the month of August. Since returning, delegates have been active in educating their communities about their experience. The following are the post-delegate actions generated by delegates as they work to increase awareness of the issue in their communities.

• Richmond delegates participate in advocacy day in support of the International Violence Against Women Act. Listen to a follow-up radio interview with Defenders Live in Richmond.


• VCU representatives brief White House on violence against women in Guatemala


• Three University of North Carolina School of Social Work graduates participated on the delegation. Karen Rotabi writes of the experience in her article Alumnae travel to Guatemala to explore violence against women (10/7/09)


• On September 8, 2009, GHRC and delegates John Willard, Veronica Colon, Roselyn Costantino, and Baylis Beard spoke about violence against women on the WPFW's Latino Media Collective, a local radio program.


• Virginia Commonwealth University professor Karen Rotabi has put together an online photo-journal about the delegation.


• Janett Forte is an Assistant Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University and is program director for VCU's Institute for Women's Health.  She, along with her VCU cohorts, will be updating the VCU-VAW blog throughout Delegation #1 - August 1 - 8, 2009. Click here to see the blog.
